Mary (nee Tuman) Walters, age 103, died Saturday, July 4, 2020 at the Schofield Residence in the Town of Tonawanda. Born August 18, 1916 in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Jozef and Katherine (nee Turek) Tuman and had been a lifelong resident of the Tonawandas. Mrs. Walters loved her Catholic faith and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church, and had been active at Our Lady’s Rosary Makers, the Tonawanda Senior Citizens Center and the Happy Notes at the Center, the Silver Fox Dancing Group, the Salvation Army Senior Citizens and the Red Hat Society in Tonawanda. She had been a member of the DeGraff Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Cross volunteers and the W.N.Y. Sportsmen’s Club. During her lifetime she had been employed at the G.M. Plant on River Road, Remington Rand Co., Wurlitzer, Sugar Cake Cone, and Tops Markets.
Mary was very family oriented and was always there to help everyone in the family. She loved to dance and started taking tap dance lessons when she was 74 years old. Mary loved flowers, was an avid gardener, and had stunning rose bushes. She gave hundreds of Evening Primrose plants that had been in her family for four generations to others, so they too could enjoy them. Mary was "a mighty fine cook" and a hard worker her entire life. Her hands, mind, and heart were never idle. She had vim, vigor, and vitality.
She was the wife of the late LaVerne “Mopsy” Walters, who died Nov. 28, 1992; mother of Judy (the late Donald) Sears of Olcott, NY, Jack (Jeanne) Walters of North Tonawanda, and the late Richard G. Walters and Carol Lee MacKay; grandmother of David (Kelly) Sears and Ken Sears, Deborah (Marty) Weaver, Kelly (Dennis) Morris and Jack Walters, Jr.; great grandmother of Tara Sydow, Taylor, Ken Jr., Brayden, Connor, Kennedy and Jakson Sears, Jack Walters III, Michael Bouchard and the late Samantha Bouchard; great, great grandmother of Reagan Sydow and Avianna Sears; and sister of the late Estelle Norman, Mary Sloan, Julia Austin, Helen Iwanicki, Frank Dworacki, Stefan Toman, and Francis, Anthony, and Benny Tuman. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Angie Toman, and many nieces and nephews.
