Esther Margaret (Varga) Kovach, of Tonawanda, entered into rest on February 15, 2020, one week short of her 94th birthday. Beloved wife of 59 years to the late Paul L. Kovach, mother of Paul W. (Jean Murray), Stephen (Carol Rusin), and George "Beaver". Cherished grandmother of Sara (Rick) Tungseth and Katie (Nick) Hanson, and adored great grandmother of William and Elin Tungseth and Paul and Amelia Hanson. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, including special friends Arlette Smith and Wanda Day.
Born in Buffalo, New York, on February 22, 1926, she was a 1944 graduate of Riverside High School and a member of the swimming and diving team.
Esther was a 60 year resident of the City of Tonawanda and served her community in multiple capacities. She was a member of the Tonawanda Police Department, serving as the Animal Control Warden for the City. Additionally, she served as an inspector for the Department of Weights and Measures, was a member of the City Republican Committee, and volunteered at DeGraff Memorial Hospital and the Buffalo Veterans Administration Hospital. She was also an active member of Salem United Church of Christ.
She was a member of numerous organizations, including The Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, the George Washington Hunting and Fishing Club Women’s Auxiliary, the Twin Cities Business and Professional Women organization, and was a life member of both the National Rifle Association and the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston for their compassion as they cared for our loved one.
A memorial service will be held Monday, February 24, 2020 at 11:00 am at Salem United Church of Christ, Morgan at Main Street., Tonawanda, NY 14150. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorials to Salem Church would be appreciated.
