Sr. Ann Frances Hemberger, S.S.M.N.February 20, 1935 ~ December 12, 2017 (age 82)
Sister Ann Frances (Carol Ann) Hemberger, SSMN was born February 20, 1935, and died December 12, 2017 at St. Mary Center, Buffalo NY.
Sister had earned her bachelor’s degree in history at Rosary Hill College in 1956 before she entered and got her master’s degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1968. As a young sister, she went immediately into education, working well with junior high students at Annunciation School in Buffalo and St. John the Baptist in Kenmore.
Then, Sister Ann Frances began a fairly long career as a principal in elementary schools, serving at St. John School in Lockport, St. Paul in Kenmore, Mount St. Mary Elementary and St. John the Baptist in Kenmore. During these years, she also served on occasion as superior or provincial councilor.
Eventually, as the Sisters of St. Mary moved into other ministries, she went into parish outreach work at St. John the Baptist, dealing mainly with the poor. Whereas her school ministry was warmed by her charm and wit, other ministries brought out her care and compassion. She received approval on state and national levels for work among persons with addictions, becoming a substance abuse counselor. Sister was employed at the Monsignor Carr Institute where she loved her work.
She was the daughter of the late Carl and Catherine (O’Malley) Hemberger and the sister of the late Robert Hemberger. She is survived by her sister-in-law Sue Hemberger and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Sister Ann Frances donated her body to science through the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Buffalo Medical School. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Easter Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at St. Mary Center. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Mary, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14213.
