Shirley (nee Penko) Covella, age 74, of Tonawanda, died Friday, January 6, 2017 at Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. Born January 7, 1942 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen (nee Druhaloski) Penko and had been a resident of Tonawanda for the greater part of her life. Shirley was a member of St. Bartholomew Anglican Church and the Altar Guild at the church. She had been employed at Erie County Child Protective Services before retiring and was a dedicated animal caregiver.
She was the wife of Joseph A. Covella; mother of Jim Keller of San Diego, California, Frank (Helen) Covella of Boca Raton, Florida, and the late Suzanne Keller, who died in 1990; sister of Darlene (the late John) Granditsch of North Tonawanda; and grandmother of Shawn Keller, Kelly Keller, Joseph Covella, and Thomas Covella.
Friends may call from 3-7 PM on Tuesday only at the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 37 Adam Street at Seymour, Tonawanda. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, 2368 Eggert Road (near Sheridan) in the Town of Tonawanda; the Rev. Arthur Ward officiating. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, 2368 Eggert Road, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
