John "Jack" Balling, age 89, of Tonawanda, died Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Hospice Buffalo in Cheektowaga. Born February 8, 1927 in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late John H. and Annabelle (nee McNitt) Balling. Jack was a lifelong resident of Tonawanda and was an Army Air Force Veteran of WWII. He owned and operated Balling Mobile Gas Station on Main Street in Tonawanda and then was a teacher at KenTon Boces before retiring. Jack was a member of National Hose Company for more than 50 years, was devoted to his family and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.
He was the husband of the late Eleanor (nee Thomas) Balling, who died May 7, 2014; father of James A. Balling of North Tonawanda, Rick (Sue) Balling of the Town of Tonawanda, Dawn (John) Schneider of Tonawanda, Mary (Trey) Hambleton of Tonawanda, and the late John R. Balling, who died June 24, 1996; and father-in-law of Patricia (John M.) Balling Cadwalader of Tonawanda. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Monday at the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 37 Adam Street at Seymour, Tonawanda, where Funeral Services and Military Honors will be held at 10 AM Tuesday; the Rev. Michael Uebler officiating. Friends invited. Entombment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonwanda. If desired, memorials to Hospice Buffalo, 225 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14227, are preferred by the family.
